Emyooga beneficiaries face arrest over loan defaults

Kamuli RDC John Batambuze has warned Emyooga beneficiaries of arrest over loan defaults as SACCO leaders raise alarm over rising defaulters threatening the programme’s sustainability.

KAMULI, UGANDA: Authorities in Kamuli have issued a stern warning to beneficiaries of the government’s Emyooga programme, cautioning that failure to repay loans could result in arrest as enforcement efforts intensify to protect the sustainability of the revolving fund.

The Kamuli Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Mr John Batambuze, delivered the warning while addressing members of the Buzaaya Camptery Emyooga SACCO during their Annual General Meeting at Nawanyago Sub-county headquarters.

Batambuze emphasized that Emyooga funds are not grants but a revolving financial scheme intended to benefit multiple groups over time.

“Emyooga funds are not a gift from the president; it is a revolving fund. You are expected to repay, and if you don’t, you will be arrested,” he said.

During the meeting, local leaders expressed concern over increasing cases of loan default, warning that continued non-repayment could cripple the programme.

Mr Isabirye Badiru, Chairperson of Emyooga Missionary in the Busoga sub-region, said SACCOs are struggling to operate effectively due to beneficiaries failing to meet their repayment obligations.

“We’re struggling with defaulters, and if this continues, the fund will collapse. We urge beneficiaries to take responsibility and repay their loans,” he said.

The Emyooga programme, a government initiative aimed at boosting household incomes through organized SACCO groups, relies heavily on repayment cycles to extend support to more beneficiaries.

District officials warned that failure to enforce accountability could undermine the programme’s long-term impact, particularly in rural communities where access to affordable credit remains limited.

Leaders at the meeting called for stricter monitoring and increased sensitisation of beneficiaries to ensure the funds achieve their intended purpose of economic empowerment.
