KAMPALA, UGANDA: Security agencies have arrested more than 100 suspects in a sweeping intelligence-led crackdown across the Kampala Metropolitan Area, targeting criminal gangs linked to robberies, phone snatching, and narcotics abuse.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the coordinated operations conducted on March 23 were triggered by a surge in public complaints over escalating crime, social disorder, and insecurity in urban communities.

At Kira Police Division, authorities arrested 34 suspects during operations in Kito B Cell, Kito A Zone, and Kireku Main Zone.

In Entebbe Division, operations in Kawafu and Abaita Ababiri led to the arrest of 46 suspects, marking the highest number of arrests in a single area.

Meanwhile, smaller operations in other areas recorded additional arrests, with 7 suspects picked up in Kilombe by Jinja Road Division police, and another 7 arrested in Namayumba by Kakiri Police.

Crimes Targeted in Operations

Police say the crackdown specifically targeted criminal gangs involved in robberies and phone snatching, abuse of narcotic substances, nighttime attacks on pedestrians and gambling and noise-related disorder in urban settings.

Authorities noted that many of the operations were carried out in crime-prone zones where residents had raised alarm over increasing insecurity.

During the raids, security teams recovered several exhibits, including suspected narcotic substances believed to have been used or distributed by the suspects.

All those arrested are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.

Police have reiterated their commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore public safety.

The latest arrests signal a renewed push by security agencies to respond swiftly to community complaints and clamp down on urban crime hotspots across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
