LUUKA, UGANDA: A suspected cattle thief has been lynched and his body set ablaze by angry residents in a shocking mob justice incident in Nabikuyi Village, Nawampiti Sub-county, Luuka District.

Authorities say the yet-to-be-identified suspect was allegedly caught attempting to steal a cow from nearby Kituuto Village before the animal owner raised an alarm, attracting a crowd that pursued him.

The suspect was reportedly cornered near Nabikuyi swamp, which separates Nabikuyi and Buwaiswa villages in Bulongo Sub-county, where he was beaten to death before his body was burned.

According to Luuka Assistant Resident District Commissioner Umar Ntogona, the situation escalated further when residents dumped the body in the middle of the road, temporarily paralyzing traffic.

Police from Nawampiti and Luuka Central Police Station later responded to the scene and restored order. “Luuka police responded, and we want to thank Luuka CPS and Nawampiti police for assisting the community because they dumped the body in the middle of the road, blocking access,” Ntogona said.

District leaders have strongly condemned the incident, warning that mob justice undermines the rule of law and destroys critical evidence.

Ntogona urged residents, particularly youth, to avoid criminal activity and instead take advantage of government empowerment programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.

“No one has the right to judge another outside the courts of law. We urge our youths to engage in productive work instead of criminal activities, which are deadly,” he said.

Nawampiti Sub-county Chairperson Bilinde Paul echoed the concerns, noting that killing suspects disrupts investigations. “This cannot justify mob justice. Evidence is lost when suspects are killed, yet they could help in investigations,” he said.

Police have since launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity of the deceased and those involved in the mob action.

Authorities are urging the public to report suspected crimes to law enforcement instead of taking matters into their own hands.

The incident adds to growing concern over mob justice in rural communities, where residents often resort to violent retaliation instead of lawful prosecution.
