Alur Kingdom rallies support for Muni University’s Leadership Institute

The Muni University Institute of Leadership and Governance is expected to serve as a hub for ethical leadership and governance excellence, supporting sustainable socio-economic transformation across West Nile and beyond.

ARUA CITY, UGANDA: The Alur Kingdom has called for unified community support for the newly launched Muni University Institute of Leadership and Governance (MUILG), positioning it as a critical solution to persistent leadership and governance gaps in the West Nile sub-region.

The call was made during the institute’s official launch on Monday, with the Kingdom’s Prime Minister Prince Lawrence Opar Angala describing the initiative as both timely and transformative.

“As the Alur Kingdom, we are part and parcel of this development. This institute has come at the right time to address leadership gaps at all levels,” he said, urging subjects to offer both human and material support to ensure its success.

The institute is being established against a backdrop of long-standing governance challenges, including weak accountability, corruption, and poor service delivery across parts of Uganda and Africa.

MUILG aims to tackle these issues by equipping leaders with practical skills in mediation, conflict resolution, ethical leadership, and modern governance practices.

Vice Chancellor of Muni University, Prof Simon Anguma Katrini, emphasized the urgency of the intervention. “If leadership is wrong, everything goes wrong. This institute is our deliberate effort to equip leaders with the skills and values needed to transform communities,” he said.

Strategic Partnerships Driving Impact

The institute is a product of collaboration between Muni University, the West Nile Development Association (WENDA), and VNG International Uganda, which provided technical and financial support.

WENDA Director Moses Otim said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen governance systems in the region. “We are committed to supporting initiatives that build leadership capacity and drive development,” he noted.

Unlike traditional academic programmes, MUILG will focus on hands-on capacity building through training, mentorship, coaching, and applied research.

Programmes have already been rolled out in Arua City, Terego, Yumbe, Koboko, and Bulambuli, targeting leaders across government, civil society, private sector, and refugee communities. “This is a practical institute. Leadership development cannot wait,” VC Prof. Anguma added.

Stakeholders emphasised that tackling governance challenges requires a collective approach. Feni Twalib stressed the need for collaboration, saying: “This institute provides a platform to shape responsible, ethical and accountable leaders.”

Organising Committee Chair Felix Andama Adiburu noted that the institute is grounded in extensive community research. “We understand the leadership challenges in our communities and are ready to address them, including emerging issues like migration and refugee integration,” he said.
