NAMISINDWA, UGANDA: Several people were seriously injured on Sunday evening after a vehicle transporting staff under the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) programme overturned along the deteriorating Nabukhuya–Sipande road.
The crash occurred at around 6:00 pm on March 23, 2026, as the team returned from Bukhaweka Sub-county, where they had been distributing government cash transfers to elderly beneficiaries.
The Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE), implemented under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, provides monthly support of UGX 25,000 to older persons, with staff often travelling across sub-counties to deliver payments.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle overturned after encountering severely damaged sections of the road, worsened by heavy rains that left deep gullies, washed-away gravel, and slippery surfaces.

Jude Wamutanga, Bukhaweka LCV Councillor-elect, described the road as a critical lifeline that has been neglected for years. “This road is in a terrible state. It is not just about transport—it affects livelihoods and access to essential government services like SAGE,” he said.
The accident has reignited public frustration among residents, who have long decried the poor condition of the Nabukhuya–Sipande road, now widely referred to as a “death trap.”
Namisindwa LCV Chairperson-elect Emma Bwayo pledged to prioritise the road’s rehabilitation in the upcoming term. “We are going to ensure this road is worked on. The safety of our people cannot be compromised,” Bwayo said.
He also urged the SAGE programme to consider adopting mobile cash transfers to reduce the need for both staff and beneficiaries to travel on risky roads.
Authorities have not yet released details on the number of casualties or the condition of those injured, as calls grow for urgent intervention to fix the road and prevent further accidents.
