OBONGI, UGANDA: Police in Obongi District have arrested two officers attached to Obongi Central Police Station over their alleged role in the escape of two suspects facing rape-related charges, raising fresh concerns over custody handling and internal accountability.
The suspects who escaped have been identified as Juma Rasual, charged with attempted rape, and Ibrahim Wongita, who faces a rape charge.
North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Collins Asea confirmed the incident, saying the escape occurred at around 6:50 am while the suspects were being escorted for a short call.
According to police, the suspects managed to open their handcuffs and fled during the process, prompting immediate investigations into possible negligence or complicity by officers on duty.

“The two officers who were responsible at the time have since been arrested and charged in connection with the escape,” Asea said, adding that their identities are being withheld pending further inquiries.
The incident has triggered concern over procedures followed during prisoner handling, particularly in high-risk cases involving serious offences.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the fugitives and appealed to the public to support efforts to rearrest them.
“We urge the community to report any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects to the nearest police station to ensure justice for the victims,” Asea said.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with more details expected as the probe progresses.
