“Turn Your Phones into Paychecks” Apac youth told

Apac RDC Jenan Okot has urged youth to use smartphones for income generation, as over 1,000 young people gain digital skills through UCC training.

Apac, Uganda: The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Apac, Jenan Okot, has warned youth against misusing smartphones and computers, urging them to turn digital tools into sources of income.

Speaking at the closing of a five-day ICT and multimedia training at Milestone Hotel in Apac Town, Okot challenged young people to shift from entertainment-driven use of technology to productive engagement.

“You must desist from using computers in the wrong way. Technology is meant to transform your lives, not to waste your time,” Okot said.

The training, organised by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, equipped youth with skills in digital marketing, multimedia production, and online communication.

Despite the initiative, Okot expressed concern that many young people remain trapped in unproductive digital habits. “Your phones should not just be for chatting or looking for boyfriends and girlfriends. They should be tools for making money and improving your household income,” he said.

He linked digital discipline to Uganda’s broader economic transformation agenda. “Uganda is moving to another level, and digital transformation is key. The youth must be at the centre of this change,” Okot added.

Training reaches over 1,000 youth

Training team leader Hosea K. Jemba revealed that the programme has already reached over 1,000 youth across ten districts. “Our focus is to ensure young people are equipped with practical digital skills that can help them earn a living,” Jemba said.

However, he warned that mindset remains a key barrier. “Many young people are still using their phones mainly for chatting and socialising. The phone in your hand is a business tool—it can connect you to markets and opportunities,” he said.

Participants described the training as a turning point in how they view technology.

Kusiima Miriam said the programme opened her eyes to income opportunities online. “Before this training, I was just using my phone for WhatsApp and Facebook chatting. Now I can use it to promote a business and earn money,” she said.

Apio Brenda admitted many youths have been wasting time online. “The internet is not just for fun—it is a place where money can be made,” she said.

Odwee Brian said he now plans to offer digital marketing services to local businesses. “I can help businesses advertise their goods online and earn from it. We are no longer limited to Apac—we can reach customers anywhere,” he noted.

Awidi Judith highlighted opportunities in promoting local products. “We have many things in our district that people don’t know about. With these skills, we can attract buyers from outside,” she said.

For Amongi Robina, the training was just timely. “This has given us hope that we can use what we have in our phones to survive,” she said.

While participants expressed optimism, leaders warned that without discipline and consistent application, the impact of such programmes could be short-lived.

Officials say the initiative forms part of a broader national push to equip youth with ICT skills and prepare them for a competitive digital economy.
