Pallisa, Uganda: Hundreds of Christians from Ariet Church of Uganda in Agule County took to the streets on Sunday in a vibrant Palm Sunday procession, singing “Hosanna” and praising God to mark the end of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week.

The procession, which moved through different zones in Ariet village, was led by Lay Reader Gideon Omijo and drew large participation from the growing Christian community.

Preaching during the celebrations, church leaders emphasized the biblical message of hope and salvation, drawing from Zechariah 9:9, which prophesies the coming of a king to save the world.

The faithful described the event as a moment of renewal, repentance, and recommitment to their spiritual journey.

Young but growing congregation

Ariet Church of Uganda, a daughter church under St. James Nyaguo Parish, currently has about 150 registered Christians, with a rapidly increasing number of children joining the congregation.

Despite its growth, the church continues to face infrastructure challenges, as worshippers currently gather in a grass-thatched structure vulnerable to harsh weather conditions.

Church leaders and members used the occasion to call on leaders, well-wishers, and the wider community to support ongoing efforts to construct a permanent place of worship.

“We appeal to our elected leaders and well-wishers to join hands with us so that we can build a decent church structure. The rains are already affecting us,” members said, referencing Haggai 1:7.

Construction has already begun, supported by contributions including 30 bags of cement from Hon. Sam Otukol and additional support from community members.

Lay Reader Gideon Omijo, who currently oversees the church, has been credited for uniting Christians and strengthening the congregation.

Omijo, a graduate of Kyambogo University with a diploma in Microfinance and a degree in Accounting and Finance from Busitema University, previously served as Head of Laity before being elected District Councillor representing Agule Sub-county.

His leadership has drawn praise from the community, which now looks to him to champion unity, development, and accountability.

Head of Laity Oonyu Eria Enabi urged Christians to remain united in order to achieve meaningful development within the church and the wider community. “Unity is key if we are to grow and develop as a church and as a people,” he said.
