Kiboga, Uganda: Security agencies have arrested fugitive prison warder Moses Anguyo in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), ending a weeks-long manhunt following the deadly shooting at Kiboga Central Prison that left four people dead.
The arrest, carried out in Aru town in the early hours of the morning, was the result of a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Investigators say the turning point in the manhunt came after the arrest of Anguyo’s two brothers and girlfriend, who provided key information on his movements and hideouts.
Their cooperation enabled security teams to trace the suspect across the border into DR Congo, where he had fled after the attack.
“He was arrested in Congo at around 3 am. He will be extradited to Uganda and charged,” Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine confirmed in a statement.
From crime scene to cross-border escape
Anguyo, attached to Kiboga Prisons, allegedly opened fire on February 23, 2026, during a routine inspection after being cautioned for using WhatsApp while on duty.
He reportedly shot and killed the Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Hope Catherine, the Principal Officer at the facility, Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, wife of the Officer in Charge and a toddler, Salson Nuwagaba, who was hit by a stray bullet.

Authorities say the suspect later went to the residence of the officer in charge, where he carried out the fatal shooting of Ayebare, while the child later died at Kiboga Hospital.
After the attack, Anguyo abandoned his firearm, changed out of his uniform into civilian clothes at a nearby shop, and fled the area.
Security agencies launched a nationwide manhunt, offering a Shs10 million bounty for information leading to his arrest.
The search extended beyond Uganda’s borders as intelligence suggested he had crossed into DR Congo.
Joint operation leads to arrest
A joint cross-border operation involving security teams from Arua District, including officers from Vurra, tracked and apprehended the suspect in Aru. Officials say coordination between Ugandan and Congolese authorities was key in securing the arrest.
Anguyo has since been transferred to Kiboga Central Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on charges of murder and related offences. “He is currently being detained and will be produced in court to answer for his crimes,” Baine said.
The arrest marks a major breakthrough in one of the most shocking incidents within Uganda’s prison system in recent months.
