FIFA slaps global ban on Mike Mutyaba, two others over match-fixing

FIFA has imposed global bans on ex-Cranes International and Premier League coach, Mike Mutyaba plus two other officials over match-fixing in Uganda, extending sanctions worldwide in a major integrity crackdown.

Kampala, Uganda: World football governing body FIFA has imposed global bans on former Express FC coach and Cranes ex-international, Mike Mutyaba, Express FC goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa, and club official Miiro Ashraf Mwanje over their involvement in match-fixing.

The bans relate to the manipulation of a 2024 Uganda Premier League match involving Express FC and Kitara FC, a move that initially attracted a local ban from FUFA.

The sanctions, confirmed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, take effect from March 12, 2026, and bar the trio from all football-related activities worldwide.

FIFA’s decision follows earlier investigations and rulings by the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, which found the individuals culpable of breaching integrity regulations.

By extending the sanctions globally, FIFA ensures the offenders cannot participate in football activities in any country under its jurisdiction.

More Ugandans already sanctioned

The latest action adds to a growing list of Ugandan football figures sanctioned over match-fixing.

Those previously handed global bans include:
1. Saleh Maganda – 5-year ban
2. Franco Oringa – 5-year ban
3. Godfrey Lwesibawa – 5-year ban
4. Yahaya Mahad Kakooza – 5-year ban
5. Andrew Waiswa – 5-year ban
6. George Nkurunziza (referee) – 10-year ban
7. Deogracious Opio (referee) – 10-year ban
These sanctions were initially issued locally before being escalated to FIFA level.

FIFA also confirmed that the case involving Mbazira Ashiraf is still under review by its Disciplinary Committee.

The global bans highlight FIFA’s continued crackdown on match manipulation, which remains a major threat to the credibility of football.

By extending national sanctions worldwide, FIFA reinforces zero tolerance toward match-fixing and sends a strong warning to players, officials, and clubs.

The scandal adds pressure on Ugandan football authorities to strengthen monitoring systems, integrity frameworks, and enforcement mechanisms within domestic competitions.

FUFA has in recent years intensified efforts to combat match-fixing through disciplinary action, education, and collaboration with international bodies.
