ESUGA, Rotary Club unite to protect Lake Victoria at Run for the Nile 2026

ESUGA and Rotary Club Jinja have launched a campaign to protect Lake Victoria during the Run for the Nile 2026, highlighting urgent environmental conservation efforts.

Jinja City, Uganda: Elderly Support Uganda (ESUGA) has partnered with the Rotary Club in Jinja to champion environmental conservation efforts aimed at protecting the endangered Lake Victoria basin.

The collaboration was unveiled during the Run for the Nile 2026, a national community event organized by the Rotary Club of Jinja, drawing participants from across the country in a collective call to safeguard Uganda’s largest freshwater body.

Speaking at the event, ESUGA Deputy Executive Director Abubakari Shemaran Mayanja said the initiative reflects the organization’s growing commitment to environmental advocacy alongside its core focus on elderly support.

“Participation in the ‘Protect Lake Victoria’ campaign demonstrates ESUGA’s continued dedication to community engagement, social responsibility, and environmental advocacy,” Mayanja said.

“By joining this national initiative, we are contributing to efforts that safeguard Uganda’s natural heritage for future generations.”

Run for the Nile 2026 chief organizer and Rotarian Ntembe Yasin emphasized the urgency of protecting Lake Victoria amid rising environmental threats.

“Of recent, we have experienced many environmental challenges such as global warming and climate change. We believe Lake Victoria is endangered, and it is high time for us to wake up and protect it through collective initiatives,” Yasin said.

The campaign highlights growing concern over environmental degradation affecting the Lake Victoria basin, which remains a critical resource for livelihoods, biodiversity, and regional ecosystems.

The event attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including community members, civil society organizations, and development partners, all united by a shared goal of promoting environmental sustainability.

Organisers say such collaborations are key to raising awareness and mobilising action toward protecting natural resources under increasing pressure from climate change and human activity.

ESUGA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental protection, unity, and sustainable development across communities in Uganda.
