Bugweri, Uganda: Grief has engulfed residents of Nsaale Village in Ibulanku Sub-county after an 11-year-old boy collapsed and died at a borehole where he had gone to fetch water after school.
The deceased has been identified as Tenywa Mupenzi, a Primary Three pupil at Joint Effort Academy Nakibembe in Nsaale Village, and son of Mesulamu Isabirye.
According to his father, Isabirye Mansurawo, the boy had been sent alongside other children to fetch water when tragedy struck. “I was at home when one of the children rushed back and told me that their colleague had collapsed unconscious at the borehole and later died,” he said.
Residents say the incident happened shortly after the children returned from school, sending shockwaves across the community.

Locals described the incident as heartbreaking, with many struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of the young boy.
Community members have since urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to children’s well-being, especially after school hours.
“We ask parents that whenever children return from school, they should take time to understand how they are feeling before sending them for chores,” said one resident, Kyozira Junior. “We also need to give children enough time and attention as part of nurturing them.”
The incident has sparked renewed calls for vigilance among parents, with emphasis on monitoring children’s health and emotional state before assigning them domestic responsibilities.
Authorities had not yet issued an official statement on the cause of death by press time.
