Nebbi Elders launch grassroots committees to promote unity, growth and regional devt

The Greater Nebbi Elders Council has rolled out grassroots committees to drive unity, development, and cultural revival across the region.

Nebbi, Uganda: The Greater Nebbi Elders Council has formally launched district-to-parish committees across Zombo, Nebbi, and Pakwach districts in a major step aimed at accelerating unity, cultural preservation, and socio-economic development in the sub-region.

The rollout, which began at Karim Hall in Zombo District headquarters on March 26, has since extended to Nebbi and Pakwach, marking what leaders described as a turning point in organizing the region’s development agenda.

The council, comprising respected figures from political, cultural, religious, and professional backgrounds, is positioning itself as a unifying platform to champion people-centered development.

Speaking during the inauguration, council chairperson Canon Vasco Kura urged members to prioritize integrity, unity, and collective responsibility. “Members, all we need from you is integrity. Work for the development of the council, putting in mind that unity and a good heart will take us far. Our sub-region is still behind; let’s work hard,” Kura said.

The former Nebbi District Education Officer emphasized that the council will leverage its networks and diplomatic channels to push for strategic development interventions. He called on all Greater Nebbi residents—regardless of political, social, or religious affiliation—to unite for a common cause.

The newly formed committees will operate from district to parish level, providing a structured mechanism for mobilization, advocacy, and coordination of development efforts.

The council has also established its offices at Sayuni Building in Oryang, Thatha Division along the Nebbi–Arua road, creating a central coordination hub for its activities.

Council leaders revealed that the organization is fully registered, guided by a constitution, and has already engaged local government and security officials to align its activities with national development programmes.

The council has recently gained visibility following its active role in promoting peace and unity during the 2026 general elections, where members were deployed across tally centres in Zombo, Nebbi, and Pakwach to monitor proceedings.

Vice Chairperson Kakura Emmy Kizito urged members to act as bold ambassadors of the council’s vision while maintaining cohesion within communities.

Meanwhile, Emilio Odongo, President of the Forum for Development of Greater Nebbi, praised the council’s progress, describing it as a long-overdue platform for amplifying the region’s voice.

Several elders welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it will address longstanding gaps in representation and cultural preservation.

Beatrice Namusisi, a retired civil servant from Paidha Town Council, said the council would play a key role in restoring cultural values and promoting development. “This council is going to preserve our culture, amplify our voices, and drive development,” she noted.

Salvathore Orwothu from Ambele Parish described the formation of the council as historic. “This is an initiative we have waited for. With time, our voices as Greater Nebbi will be heard,” he said.

As part of its broader strategy, the council recently held a high-level engagement with newly elected leaders in Nebbi Municipality, focusing on unity, peaceful leadership, and development-oriented governance.

Canon Kura emphasized that organization and unity are key to unlocking opportunities for the sub-region. “Even the President of Uganda values organized communities. This council is here to shape a better future for generations to come,” he said.
