Kamuli, Uganda: Over 9,000 residents in Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District, are set to benefit from a newly launched multi-billion shillings Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project spearheaded by WaterAid in partnership with local authorities.

The project aims to expand access to safe and clean water while improving sanitation and hygiene standards across key public institutions in the area.

Funded by WaterAid and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the initiative will see the construction of water facilities at Balawoli Primary School, an incinerator at Balawoli Health Centre III, and a modern toilet facility at Balawoli Secondary School.

Speaking at the launch, WaterAid Uganda Country Director, Ms Joy Mpalanyi Magala, said the project is a major step toward improving public health and restoring dignity in underserved communities.

“Hygiene will be improved, pupils will enjoy safe drinking water, and handwashing will reduce the spread of preventable diseases,” Magala said. “What we are witnessing today is restoring dignity and reducing the distances women have been travelling to access safe water.”

She called on local leaders to ensure sustainability of the project, warning against illegal water connections that could compromise the system.

Kamuli Deputy Resident District Commissioner Mafumo Adonia urged residents to take collective responsibility in protecting the facilities.

“Let us be vigilant and work together to ensure that this project is not sabotaged. Its success depends on how well we manage it,” he said.

Balawoli Town Council Deputy Mayor Kawongo Gerald welcomed the project, describing it as a transformative intervention for the community. “This project will greatly improve the lives of our people. We appreciate WaterAid for bringing development closer to our community,” he said.

Education officials also hailed the development, noting its potential to enhance learning conditions.

Aron Gwolaba from the district education department said improved sanitation and access to safe water would create a healthier environment for learners. “This will strengthen our education system by ensuring children study in a safe and hygienic environment,” he noted.

The project is expected to significantly reduce waterborne diseases, improve school attendance, and ease the burden on women and children who often travel long distances in search of clean water.
