Easter in Zombo: Security, clergy unite against mob justice

Security officials joined Easter celebrations in Zombo, using the platform to warn against mob justice and promote peace, vigilance, and moral renewal among residents.

Zombo, Uganda: Security leaders in Zombo District joined hundreds of Christian faithful for Easter Sunday Mass at Paidha Catholic Parish, using the occasion to rally residents against mob justice and promote peace, vigilance, and moral renewal.

The colourful celebration at Oturgang Catholic Church drew top district security officials, including Resident District Commissioner Festus Ayikobua, Assistant RDC Bruno Mananu, District Police Commander SSP Job Mutegeki, CID officers, UPDF representatives, Uganda Prisons officers, and DISO delegates, who worshipped alongside the community.

The Mass, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ, was punctuated by a heavy hour-long downpour that believers described as a blessing, as hymns and chants filled the church grounds led by the St. Francis of Assisi choir.

Addressing the congregation, RDC Ayikobua issued a strong warning against mob violence following recent incidents in the area.

“People are killing each other a lot. We call upon you not to kill others if you suspect they have committed a crime. We are seeing innocent people being killed. We have our police officers here; they can handle such cases,” Ayikobua said.

His remarks come in the wake of the alleged mob killing of two teenagers in Paidha Town Council over suspected motorcycle theft, and amid rising national concern following the 2025 Police Crime Report that recorded hundreds of mob justice cases.

Ayikobua also urged parents to prioritise their children’s education, cautioned against land conflicts, and called for heightened vigilance during festive periods.

Paidha Catholic Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Mungujakisa Paul, commended the security teams for standing with the community and maintaining stability in the district.

In his sermon, he emphasised the deeper meaning of Easter as a source of hope and renewal. “Jesus is amongst us. Let us live in the life of Christ’s resurrection,” he said.

Fr. Mungujakisa cautioned against drug abuse and misuse of substances, urging believers to respect their bodies, while also calling on those with means to uplift others rather than exploit them.

In a similar message across the district, Rev. Marlon Rupiny of Paidha Town Parish Church of Uganda delivered an Easter sermon at St. Paul Church of Uganda, Mvungu, urging Christians to draw strength from Christ’s resurrection.

“The powerful resurrection of Jesus Christ has given us hope,” Rev. Rupiny preached, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in faith and resist temptation.

Easter Sunday, the most significant day in the Christian calendar, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and symbolises victory over death, hope over despair, and renewal of life—messages that resonated strongly with worshippers in Zombo amid calls for unity and peaceful coexistence.
