Kikuube, Uganda: Peter Banura Araali, the Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson whose life was tragically cut short in a road crash on Saturday night, was widely regarded as one of Bunyoro’s rising political figures, young, grounded, and deeply committed to grassroots leadership.
Banura died after being knocked by a speeding taxi at around 8:00 pm in Butiamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council, along the Hoima–Fort Portal road. The vehicle, registration number UBQ 853E, was reportedly travelling from Kagadi towards Hoima when it struck him.
He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
But who was Peter Banura?
Born into a family with deep roots in Uganda’s political and military history, Banura was the son of Maj Gen (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza, a historical figure in the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Yet, those who knew him say he carved his own path, quietly building a reputation as a humble and accessible leader.
Banura made history as the pioneer LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District following its creation in 2018 from Hoima District. His leadership coincided with the formative years of the district, a period that required stability, coordination, and vision.
He had just secured a second term in office after being re-elected in the January 2026 general elections, a sign of growing public confidence in his leadership.
At the time of his death, Banura was actively engaged in local development work, often visiting communities and supervising projects personally—a trait that endeared him to many residents.
Bunyoro mourns loss of gallant Banura

Colleagues describe Banura as a calm and measured leader who prioritised service over political drama.
Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Godwin Angalia said Banura’s leadership style stood out. “He was a peaceful man. His service to the district will always be remembered,” RDC Angalia said.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja described his death as a major loss not only to Kikuube but to the country at large.
“He was a young man deeply committed to leadership and service. As the pioneer LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube, he was dedicated to the progress of the district and the wellbeing of its people. We have lost a very humble man who still had much life ahead of him,” she said.
Leaders across the Bunyoro sub-region echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his ability to work across political and administrative lines.
Hoima Resident City Commissioner Badru Mugabi noted his strong regional relationships, while Buhaguzi MP Francis Kazini said he had worked with Banura without conflict.
What police say
Police in the Albertine Region said Saturday they had impounded the vehicle involved in the crash, and investigations are ongoing as authorities hunt for the driver who fled the scene.
“We’ve since impounded the taxi, and that means we can’t fail to find the driver. We shall get him to tell us what exactly happened,” said Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza.
As Kikuube mourns, Banura is remembered not just as a district leader, but as a symbol of a new generation of leadership in Bunyoro, one whose promise was abruptly cut short at a time when many believed his journey was only beginning.
