Kampala, Uganda: Police in Katwe Division have dismantled a notorious panga-wielding robbery gang that has been terrorising parts of Makindye, Salaama, Bunga, and Katwe, arresting at least 10 suspects in a targeted intelligence-led operation.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the breakthrough followed the arrest of a key suspect identified as Olwo alias Tom on April 5 along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division.

“On 5th April 2026, following credible intelligence, a suspect identified as Olwo alias Tom was arrested along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division while riding a motorcycle, registration number UMA 979 HA (Haojue, maroon). Upon interrogation, he confessed to being part of an organised gang involved in violent robberies using pangas and motorcycles,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire said the suspect’s confession led to a coordinated operation on April 8 in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, where nine additional suspects were arrested, including Bogere Latif alias Musoga and Turyahirwa Ivan alias Musiramu.

“Acting on this information, a targeted operation was conducted on 8th April 2026 at around 0500 hours in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, Makindye Division. Nine suspects were arrested, including Bogere Latif alias Musoga and Turyahirwa Ivan alias Musiramu, among others,” he said.

Police also impounded four motorcycles believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes, noting that some of the bikes are suspected to have been stolen and used for quick escape after attacks.

Investigations indicate that the group had been operating for a considerable period, targeting pedestrians and motorists for cash and electronic devices.

“The suspects confessed to multiple robberies, including the theft of UGX 350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu Zone, Salaama Parish, as well as several mobile phone snatching incidents along Salaama Road. One suspected stolen phone was recovered,” said Owoyesigyire.

Authorities say the gang relied on pangas and motorcycles to execute swift and violent attacks, instilling fear among residents in the affected areas.

“Investigations indicate that the group has been operating for a considerable period, primarily targeting money and electronic devices, and using motorcycles, some suspected to be stolen for quick escape.”

All suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations, as police intensify operations to dismantle remaining criminal networks in the city.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, robbery remains one of the most prevalent urban crimes, with gangs increasingly using motorcycles and crude weapons to target unsuspecting victims, particularly in high-traffic areas and informal settlements.
