Bukedea, Uganda: Bukedea Comprehensive School has etched its name into Uganda’s volleyball history after its men’s team was crowned 2026 National Volleyball League Serie B champions, securing promotion to the country’s top-flight Serie A for the first time.

The historic triumph marks one of the school’s biggest sporting achievements and places Bukedea District firmly on Uganda’s volleyball map.

Organised by the Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF), the National League Serie B serves as the country’s second-tier volleyball competition and provides a pathway to the elite Serie A.

Speaking after the victory, the school’s Games and Sports Teacher, Timothy Bogere, described the achievement as the result of determination, teamwork and strong institutional support.

Bogere acknowledged the challenges of simultaneously managing competitive football and volleyball programmes, saying both disciplines require significant financial investment.

“It was not easy to concurrently manage two demanding sports, football and volleyball, because they are costly,” Bogere said.

He commended the school administration for consistently facilitating the team throughout the competition until it reached the national finals.

Bogere singled out Patrick Oyirwoth, Joel Otim and Shedrack Kamemuko for their outstanding performances, describing them as key players whose talent and coordination inspired the team’s successful campaign.

Bukedea Comprehensive booked its place among the top contenders after defeating Amy’s College 3-1 in the zonal finals.

School Managing Director Prof. Jonas Gumisiriza hailed the victory as one of the institution’s greatest sporting milestones.

“The addition of the men’s volleyball trophy to our archives is one of the most remarkable sporting achievements for the school,” Prof. Gumisiriza said.

He noted that winning the Serie B title opens a new chapter for the school as the team prepares to compete against Uganda’s established volleyball clubs in Serie A.

“Topping Serie B is an eye-opener for a fresh challenge as the school team now joins seasoned clubs in Serie A, which requires commitment and determination,” he added.

Headteacher Enoch Nadanga said the championship had elevated not only the school’s profile but also the reputation of Bukedea District on the national stage.

“The victory is more than a trophy. It’s proof that dedication, resilience and a winning mindset can turn ambition into achievement,” Nadanga said.

He thanked the players, coaching staff, management and supporters for their sacrifice and commitment, saying the achievement would be remembered for years.

Player Joel Otim said the triumph would motivate the team to aim even higher.

“We will continue to dream bigger, work harder and aim higher, because this victory is not the destination but another milestone,” Otim said.

Uganda Volleyball Federation President Zaid Nasiu welcomed the growing standard of school volleyball, saying the sport continues to gain popularity across secondary schools and institutions of higher learning.

“The campaign is now descending down to primary schools as well,” Nasiu said.

“It is my great pleasure when teams excel to the next stage of the tournament.”

With the Serie B title secured, Bukedea Comprehensive will now compete in Serie A, where it will face some of Uganda’s most established volleyball clubs in the upcoming season.
