Kampala, Uganda: Kiryandongo District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Katusiime Jovia has urged the Government to establish a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) detachment in Bweyale Town Council to address what she described as growing insecurity in the area.
Raising the matter on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Hon Katusiime said residents of Bweyale and neighbouring communities are increasingly living in fear following a rise in criminal incidents that have resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property and heightened insecurity.
She argued that establishing a permanent UPDF detachment would strengthen security operations, improve coordination among security agencies, and help deter criminal activity.
“The safety and security of the people of Kiryandongo District must remain a priority. A stronger security presence will protect lives and property while creating an environment that supports business, investment and socio-economic development,” Hon Katusiime told Parliament.
The legislator appealed to the Government to urgently intervene, saying the deteriorating security situation requires immediate action.
Responding on behalf of the Government, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja acknowledged the concerns raised and assured Parliament that the matter would be addressed.
Rt Hon Nabbanja said she would engage the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to assess the security situation in Bweyale Town Council and the wider Kiryandongo District before determining the most appropriate intervention.
“We shall engage the relevant ministries to assess the prevailing security situation and determine the appropriate measures required to address the concerns raised,” the Prime Minister said.
She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and assured Members of Parliament that security concerns raised on behalf of their constituents would receive due consideration.
Hon Katusiime welcomed the Prime Minister’s response, expressing optimism that the assessment would be conducted expeditiously and practical measures implemented to restore peace and strengthen security in Kiryandongo District.
The parliamentary intervention has renewed hope among residents that the Government will take decisive steps to improve security and enhance protection for communities in Bweyale and surrounding areas.
