Kampala, Uganda: Police in Katwe have arrested five suspects believed to be behind a string of aggravated robberies across the Kampala Metropolitan Area, recovering two pangas and impounding two motor vehicles allegedly used in the commission of the crimes.

The suspects were identified as Muwanguzi Believer Eddie, Kato Faisal, Katongole Shafic, Kiyingi Abudallah, and Tumwine Derrick.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango, the arrests stemmed from investigations into an aggravated robbery that occurred on July 6, 2026, at about 3:30 a.m., when five assailants allegedly broke into a mobile money outlet in Kisingiri Cell, Bunamwaya Parish, Bunamwaya Division, Wakiso District, making away with an unspecified amount of cash and several mobile phones.

Police said intelligence gathered two days later indicated that some of the suspects were hiding in Nabisalu, near the market in Katwe I Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala.

Acting on the information, detectives mounted an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of the five suspects.

Subsequent searches at the suspects’ residences in Gangu B Cell, Busabala Parish, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, led to the recovery of two pangas, which investigators believe were used during the robberies.

Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to several other robberies across the metropolitan area, including a robbery at a boutique in Seeta, Mukono District, on July 3, 2026, where a black Toyota Noah was allegedly used, as well as another robbery targeting a lending office in Kawempe Division, Kampala.

Police said the suspects are also being investigated over other related robbery incidents.

Investigators further established that the suspects allegedly hired motor vehicles to facilitate their criminal operations.

Police have since impounded two vehicles believed to have been used by the group: a grey Toyota Noah, registration number UBR 796R, and an off-white Toyota Wish, registration number UA 120CU.

The suspects remain in police custody pending prosecution as detectives continue hunting for other individuals believed to be part of the criminal network.

Police said investigations are ongoing and appealed to members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar robberies to report to the nearest police station.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling organised criminal gangs and ensuring those responsible for violent robberies are brought to justice.
