Wakiso, Uganda: The Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Dr Patricia Achan Okiria, has urged students to take personal responsibility for shaping their careers, stressing that success is built on discipline, integrity and deliberate choices.
Dr Achan made the remarks while serving as the Guest of Honour at Kisubi High School’s Careers Fair, where she delivered the keynote address under the theme, “My Career, My Responsibility.”
The careers fair brought together professionals from various sectors to mentor students, share career experiences and encourage learners to make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.
Addressing the students, Dr Achan said career success begins with taking responsibility for one’s decisions, values and long-term aspirations. “What does it take to build a successful career? It begins with taking responsibility for your choices, your values, and your future,” Dr Achan noted.
She encouraged learners to recognise that while opportunities may be provided by parents, teachers, mentors and society, the responsibility to prepare for those opportunities lies with each individual.
“While opportunities may come from many people, the responsibility to prepare, make ethical choices, and pursue excellence ultimately rests with each individual.”
The Deputy IGG emphasised that lasting professional success requires more than academic qualifications, noting that discipline, ethical conduct, continuous learning and a commitment to serving society are equally important.
“A career is built through discipline, integrity, continuous learning, and a commitment to making a positive impact,” she noted, urging students to uphold strong values throughout their education and future professional lives.
Praise for Kisubi High School
Dr Achan commended Kisubi High School for organising the careers fair, saying such initiatives expose students to diverse professions while helping them make informed career choices.
She said engagements between students and experienced professionals play an important role in preparing young people for the world of work and empowering them to contribute positively to national development.
The annual careers fair brought together experts from different fields who shared practical insights and mentorship with students as they explored future education and employment opportunities.
