Luuka, Uganda: Police in Luuka District have arrested a 30-year-old woman to assist with investigations into the death of her three-month-old baby, whose body was recovered from a pit latrine in Namalemba Village, Bulongo Sub-county.
The suspect, identified as Mwogeza Teddy, is alleged to have administered an overdose of tablets to the infant before dumping the body in a neighbour’s pit latrine.
According to preliminary police findings, residents became concerned after noticing the baby had gone missing. Their search proved unsuccessful, prompting them to report the matter to local leaders, who alerted police.
Mwogeza was subsequently arrested and taken to Kiyunga Police Station to assist with investigations.
Police say the suspect reportedly made a statement during interrogation regarding the incident. The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death remain under investigation.
LC I Chairperson David Babi condemned the incident and urged communities to support young people facing unintended pregnancies.
“This is painful and it destroys both the mother and the child. Let us take responsibility by supporting young girls and guiding them through difficult situations,” Babi said.
Area councillor Kasolo Nuhu appealed to mothers experiencing personal or family challenges to seek assistance from community leaders and health workers.
“If you have problems, go to leaders or health workers for support instead of resorting to violence. There is always help available,” Kasolo said.
Police officers from Kiyunga Police Station visited the scene and recovered the infant’s body from the pit latrine.
The body was taken to Kiyunga Health Centre IV Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Police say the suspect remains in custody and will be charged upon completion of investigations.
