Busia, Uganda: Police in Busia District have arrested two Kenyan nationals and launched a manhunt for a third suspect following an alleged aggravated robbery that left a 23-year-old student injured and his motorcycle stolen along the Busia–Tororo Road.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, near Mawero Islamic Primary School in Amagoro Village, Mawero Parish, Buteba Sub-county.
According to Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson IP Mugwe Johnson Moses, the victim, Wafula Edwin, 23, a student and resident of Amagoro Village, was riding his red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (Registration No. KMGX 137B) from his home to attend an early morning service at St. Jude Catholic Church in Busia Town when he was ambushed.
Police said Wafula was intercepted by three men travelling on another red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. “The suspects stopped the victim and repeatedly hit him on the head before one of them fled with the victim’s motorcycle,” IP Mugwe said.
The victim raised an alarm, attracting nearby residents and prompting the suspects to flee.
Police said one suspect escaped with the stolen motorcycle, while the other two ran into a nearby bush before later surrendering to security personnel at a gold mining company in Mawero Eastern Division.
Security personnel alerted police, who responded and arrested the pair.
The suspects have been identified as Otieno Brian, 21, a casual worker from Matayos Village, Busia County, Kenya, and Otieno Kennedy, 20, a resident of Bujumba Village, Butula Location, Busia County, Kenya.
Wafula was rushed to Busia Health Centre IV for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
During the investigation, police recovered the motorcycle allegedly used by the suspects, a red Bajaj Boxer bearing Kenyan registration number KMGY 830S.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle is suspected to have been stolen in Kenya. It has since been impounded and is being held at Busia Central Police Station as an exhibit pending further investigations.
Police have identified the third suspect, who allegedly escaped with the victim’s motorcycle, as Anthony Kennedy Charles, also a Kenyan national.
A manhunt has been launched to apprehend him and recover the stolen motorcycle.
Detectives from Busia Central Police Station, together with Scene of Crime officers, visited and documented the scene, while statements have been recorded from the arrested suspects.
IP Mugwe said investigators are also examining whether the suspects are linked to other cross-border aggravated robbery cases reported along the Uganda-Kenya border.
The incident underscores growing concerns over cross-border motorcycle theft and violent robberies in the Busia border corridor, where security agencies from Uganda and Kenya have intensified joint efforts to combat transnational crime.
