Karenga, Uganda: The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Karenga District, Ronald Kedi Ongodia, has monitored the distribution of government food relief supplies to vulnerable households in Nakitoit Parish, Karenga Sub-county, as authorities continue efforts to address food insecurity in the district.
The distribution exercise, conducted on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, formed part of the second phase of emergency food support targeting households identified as most vulnerable to food shortages.
A total of 565 bags of maize flour, weighing 11,300 kilograms, and 565 bags of beans, weighing 5,750 kilograms, were distributed to beneficiaries across the parish.
During the exercise, Ongodia inspected the distribution process to ensure the relief items reached the intended recipients in a transparent, orderly and accountable manner.
He emphasised the importance of safeguarding government relief programmes from misuse, noting that accountability remains critical in ensuring assistance reaches households most in need.
The monitoring exercise also sought to strengthen coordination between district leaders, local authorities and community representatives involved in implementing the food distribution programme.
Residents who received the relief welcomed the government’s intervention, saying the food supplies would provide temporary relief to families struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs.
Karenga District, like many parts of the Karamoja sub-region, continues to face recurring food insecurity driven by prolonged dry spells, erratic weather patterns, reduced agricultural production and limited livelihood opportunities.
Although emergency food assistance provides immediate support, local leaders encouraged communities to invest in agriculture and other sustainable livelihood activities to improve long-term household food security.
District authorities reaffirmed their commitment to closely monitoring government programmes to promote transparency, accountability and effective service delivery across Karenga.
The latest food distribution forms part of ongoing government and humanitarian interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable communities while strengthening resilience against future food shortages in the Karamoja sub-region.
Karamoja remains one of Uganda’s most food-insecure regions due to the combined effects of climate change, prolonged droughts, low agricultural productivity and limited economic opportunities. Government and humanitarian agencies have continued to implement food assistance and resilience-building programmes to support affected communities while promoting sustainable livelihoods.
