Namutumba, Uganda: Police in Namutumba District have launched a manhunt for a 68-year-old man accused of murdering his 78-year-old brother following a long-running dispute over family land inherited from their late father.
The suspect has been identified as Nalugoda George, a resident of Namuwondo A Village, Ituba Parish, Namutumba Sub-county. The deceased is Kakaire Patrick George, 78, who also lived in the same village.
According to Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, the incident occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at around 6:00 pm.
“The Territorial Police in Namutumba District are hunting for a 68-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of his brother,” ASP Kasadha said.
Police said the fatal confrontation occurred shortly after the suspect was served with a police summons requiring him to appear at Namutumba Police Station on August 3, 2026 to answer allegations of malicious damage to property and criminal trespass reported by the deceased.
According to ASP Kasadha, the summons had been delivered through the area’s Vice Chairperson. “Upon receiving the summons from the Vice Chairperson of the area, the suspect allegedly attacked the deceased from his home, tore the summons before assaulting his brother,” Kasadha said.
Investigators say Kakaire fell from his seat during the assault and lost consciousness.
Residents who responded to the incident reportedly carried him into his house, where he was later pronounced dead.
Long-running family land dispute
Preliminary investigations indicate that the brothers had been embroiled in a prolonged dispute over land inherited from their late father, Yosamu Nalugoda. Police believe the disagreement had persisted for some time before escalating into the fatal incident.
A team of detectives led by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers visited and documented the crime scene before the deceased’s body was taken to Iganga Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Following the examination, the body was released to relatives for burial.
Police have appealed to members of the public to assist in tracing the suspect, who remains at large. ASP Kasadha assured the public that any information leading to the suspect’s arrest would be handled confidentially.
“The Police call upon members of the public with any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to report to the nearest Police Station,” he said.
“We further urge members of the public, especially families, to resolve land disputes amicably through local leaders and courts instead of resorting to violence,” ASP Kasadha added.
