Lira, Uganda: Thomas Max Ameny, a former member of the Lira District Land Board, has been charged before the Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Lira over the alleged fraudulent acquisition of a freehold land title on government land.
Ameny, who also previously served as Speaker of Lira District, was on Friday arraigned by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
He faces charges of fraudulent procurement of a certificate of title and forgery.
According to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the alleged offences were committed between 2019 and 2020 in Lira District.
Prosecutors allege that Ameny, together with other suspects still at large, used his position as a member of the Lira District Land Board to fraudulently facilitate the conversion of government land from customary tenure to freehold tenure.
Investigators contend that Ameny and his alleged accomplices forged a land application form for the conversion process and falsely declared that his wife, Edwe Dorcus Rita, was the customary owner of part of the government land located at Ireda Estate in Lira City.
The prosecution further alleges that the forged documents were used to obtain a freehold certificate of title in Edwe Dorcus Rita’s name for Plot 2 Abosolom Oteng Road at Ireda Estate.
Authorities say investigations into the matter are continuing as efforts to trace and apprehend the other suspects remain underway.
The prosecution is part of ongoing efforts by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and its partner agencies to crack down on the fraudulent acquisition of public land and abuse of public office.
The court remanded Ameny until August 13, 2026, when he is expected to reappear for further proceedings.
