Mastercard Foundation announces 220 new scholarships for 2021

The Mastercard Foundation has announced 220 scholarship opportunities for students from marginalised communities.

The scholarship programme is a result of a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM).

Under the partnership, 110 undergraduate and 110 Masters scholarships will be provided for eight years in agriculture-related academic programmes.

“The scholarships target academically deserving yet economically disadvantaged, marginalised communities and those coming from conflict and post-conflict areas of Africa. The scholarships are tenable at Egerton University in Kenya and Gulu University in Uganda,” the foundation said in a statement issued on Monday.

“For the academic year 2021/2022, thirty master’s scholarships are available, of which 50% will be for Kenya and Uganda nationals. Fifty percent of the scholarships will be awarded to female applicants.”

According to the statement, the beneficiaries will receive comprehensive scholarships, leadership development, life skills support, entrepreneurship training and mentorship and exposure to community engagement.

To qualify for the scholarship, one has to be a Kenya or Uganda national, or a citizen of any African country to benefit from the Africa region quota. Other requirements are that the applicants should be less than 30 years of age and demonstrate an interest in agriculture, agribusiness, entrepreneurship and a strong commitment to community engagement and transformation.

The academic programmes eligible for application at Gulu University this year are Master of Science in Food Security and Community Nutrition as well as Master of Science in Agri-enterprises Development.

At Egerton University, the master’s programmes available are in agribusiness management, animal nutrition and food science.
