Inside Kiira Motors Plan to Produce Over 1,000 Buses this year

The initiative is aimed at modernizing public transport in the urban centres in Uganda and beyond while building the indigenous motor vehicle industry.

BUSINESS, KAMPALA: Kiira Motors Corporation plans to produce up to 1,030 buses by end of this year. These buses will be both electric and fuel consuming.

The initiative according to the corporation is aimed at modernizing public transport in the urban centres in Uganda and beyond while building the indigenous motor vehicle industry through technology transfer and localization of auto parts manufacturing.

However, this target sounds so unrealistic and unattainable by a company that has only produced prototypes since its incorporation in 2014.

However, Kiira Motors management is confident this target is achievable.

Allan Muhumuza, Kiira Motors’ director for sales and marketing says their optimism is hinged on the completion of the corporation’s assembly plant which is expected to be completed in June this year in the Jinja industrial area.

Muhumuza says construction is 70% complete and it is expected to produce 22 buses daily.

Muhumuza explains that they are building capacity at their current assembly point at Luwero Industries from where they have built the Kayoola Diesel Bus that was put on the road for testing recently.
