MAKERERE: The Makerere University Electoral Commission has released a final list of duly nominated candidates to contest for the guild presidency.
The National Unity Platform’s Judith Nalukwago is among the four candidates who have been confirmed to vie for the position with two candidates dropped out of the six names submitted.
The confirmed candidates for the Guild race are Tumusiime Joseph, a second-year Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences student, Oguttu Aaron pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Education, Mutabarura Joshua of Bachelor of Laws, and NUP’s Judith Nalukwago doing Bachelor of Development Studies.
According to the Commission Chairperson, Mr. Jackson Twijukye, aspiring candidates are required to have no missing marks/retakes, among other qualifications.
Earlier this week a Certificate of Academic Standing signed by the Makerere University Academic Registrar leaked and it indicated that Muhwezi, one of the candidates had a missing mark in one paper.
Muhwezi, who is a third-year Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences student had contested under the ruling party (NRM) ticket and many students had hopes of securing the bag during this year’s guild campaigns. Nominated candidates are now expected to kick off virtual campaigns which will be conducted on media platforms like TVs, radio as well as social media.
The University will go the polls on April 30, to vote for their new guild leaders in an what will be either an electronic or physical voting depending on the circumstances at hand, according to EC.
Twijukye confirmed that the list was final but noted that any of the candidates can be disqualified in case any form of false information is discovered in breach of election practice regulations.
