Betway Kobs defeated Stanbic Black Pirates 15-5 at Legends Rugby Club to win the 2021 Nile Special Stout Premier Rugby League title.
The victory ended a four season wait, and Kobs skipper Brian Asaba said,’It is great for us. it has given us morale and momentum to go for more that is there this season.”
Alhaji Manano gave the hosts the lead with a try followed by a conversion by Ijongat to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Pirates replied with a try by Haruna Muhamad but Conrad Wanyama missed the conversion to set a 7-0 half time score in a tightly contested fixture.
In the second half, Kobs mounted pressure, managing a penalty by Ijongat and a try by Pius Ogena to seal the score 15-5, winning their 14th league title on a wet pitch.
Pirates’ team captain Ivan Magomu attributed the defeat to the lack of experience but vowed to revenge in the National 7s circuit.
“We tried our best but Kobs had an edge over us in experience. In the sportsman spirit, we congratulate them and we wait for what is next,” Magomu said after the game.
Earlier on, Heathens had defeated Rhinos 45-10 winning with a bonus point and waited for the results between Kobs and Pirates.
