PADER DISTRICT | UGANDA: The headteacher of Tumalyec Primary School in Laguti sub-county, Pader district has been arrested over allegations of theft.
David Oyaro and his accomplice identified as Okello Katerega were arrested after they allegedly stole 11 pieces of iron sheets belonging to the school.
Laguti sub-county chairperson Christopher Mwaka said the suspects were arrested on Sunday following a tip-off from residents who saw people believed to be thieves carrying away iron sheets from the school.
According to Mwaka, the suspects broke into the school stores on Saturday and swiftly transported the iron sheets to Laguti Trading centre.
The sheets were allegedly found in a shop belonging to Katerega, who accused the headteacher of owning the loot, prompting the arrest of both.
Oyaro, however, denied stealing the iron sheets, saying they were meant to be disposed of.
Richard Oyo, the chairperson of the school management committee, said no meeting had ever been convened to discuss the disposal of the iron sheets
Pader District Education Officer Francis Olwoch said his office was not aware of the incident since he was not in office.
A criminal case registered under SD: 05/16/05/2021 has been opened and upon conclusion of investigations the suspects could be charged with theft and abuse of office.
