JUST IN: Medical schools to re-open on 13th August

The Ministry of Education and Sports has okayed the reopening of medical and health training institutions effective Friday, 13th August 2021.

According to the letter dated 5th August 2021 seen by the DailyExpress, the decision to re-open medical schools was reached during an inter-ministerial meeting with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) on 4th August 2021.

In the meeting, it had been agreed that the medical schools starting with finalists and post-graduate classes be re-opened under Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) effective 30th August.

However, this was later on changed when the Executive Director of NCHE Prof Mary Okwakol announced that the reopening dates for medical institutions has been brought forward to 13th August 2021.

“Reference is made to my letter dated 5th August 2021, regarding reopening of medical schools and health training institutions. The date of reopening of medical schools and health training institutions has been brought forward from Monday 30th August to Friday 13th August 2021,’’ Prof Okwakol clarified.

“Inspections will be conducted after re-opening. Arrangements have been made to carryout vaccination at the school institutions,’’ she adds.

According to NCHE, this was in consideration of the fact that medical schools are a source of specialized human resource for the health sector. The institutions have been advised to continue training the preclinical classes remotely using Open, Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL)
