WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram globally down in major outage

AGENCIES: WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook all owned by technology giants Facebook Inc. have all globally gone down in a major outage.

The three apps – which run on shared infrastructure all completely stopped working at around 6:40 pm (EAT). Other products that are part of the same family of apps, such as Facebook Workplace, also stopped working.

At the time of the downtime error, Facebook users simply saw an error page or a message that their browser could not connect. The WhatsApp and Instagram apps did not show new content, including any messages sent or received during the problems.

According to downdetector, more than 20,000 incidents of people reported issues with Facebook and Instagram at the time of the outage.

Messaging platform WhatsApp was also down for over 14,000 users, while Messenger was down for nearly 3,000 users by 6:40 pm when the outage happened.

Downdetector only tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform. The outage might be affecting a larger number of users.

By press time, Facebook was yet to comment on the outage.
