The news of Kiverenge’s passing was confirmed by President Museveni’s Senior Press Secretary, Ms. Lindah Nabusayi in a tweet sent out on Tuesday morning.

“She always checked in on the Press whenever she was back home. We have lost a great civil servant. RIP HopeKivengere,” Nabusayi said in a brief statement on her timeline.

Kivengere held the job of Press Secretary to the President for a record of 15 years serving from 1986 when the NRM/A took power until 2001.

In the six months preceding the NRA victory, she had been one of its delegates to the Nairobi Peace Talks with the Tito Lutwa government which ended in the Nairobi Peace Agreement for power-sharing that was never implemented.

Kiverenge was replaced by former journalist Mary KAroro Okurut, who was followed by Onapito Ekomuloit and later replaced by Joseph Tamale Mirundi before Don Wanyama took over the job.

After leaving her job as Museveni spokesperson, Kivengere held a number of international jobs as a peace-keeping envoy in East and the horn of Africa.

Kivengere worked in peacekeeping missions in Somalia and Sudan. She worked in the areas of strategic communication focusing on counter-violent extremism.

She was also once the chief of party for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development-IGAD based in Djibouti.

Kivengere held a degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from Chatham University in the United States of America.

She is the daughter of the late Bishop Festo Kivengere, the renowned Evangelist and intellectual, one of the people President Yoweri Museveni held in the highest regard.
