KAYUNGA, UGANDA: The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has endorsed Ms. Harriet Nakwedde as its flag bearer for the much-anticipated LCV by-elections in Kayunga District.
The Kayunga District chairperson seat fell vacant following the death of Mr. Ffeffeka Sserubogo whose body was found hanging lifeless on a tree in June 2021. Ffeffeka was a member of the National Unity Platform.
With more than 12 Nup members who including Sserubogo’s relatives Jamir Kamoga and Fatumah Nakanwagi expressing interest to carry the party flag in the by-elections, NUP’s Electoral Management Committee Chairperson, Mr. Mercy Walukamba said Nakwedde, was endorsed as a suitable candidate to contest in the race and see the party retain its position in the district.
“The committee conducted vetting and consulted the people of Kayunga through field visits and surveys. I accordingly announce that after the elaborate process. Hon. Nakwedde Harriet has emerged the winner, and she will carry the NUP flag in the upcoming elections,” Walukamba said during the party’s press brief.
Prior to the 2021 polls, Nakwedde was the Forum for Democratic Change ( FDC) Kayunga District chairperson. However, she decided to cross over to NUP during the elections.
Apparently, FDC members who include Ronald Ssozi, a former Ntenjeru North aspirant, and Abdul Muliika who contested for Baale constituency in the just concluded 2021 elections are awaiting party endorsement.
Nakwedde joins NRM’s Andrew Muwonge and DP’s Anthony Waddimba who have both been endorsed by their respective parties to contest for the LC5 seat.
The Electoral Commission set November 29 and 30 as nomination days and December 16, as the polling day for the Kayunga LCV District chairperson by-election.
