KAMPALA, UGANDA: The opposition Democratic Party-DP has fronted Anthony Waddimba as its candidate for the Kayunga LCV by-election.
Last month, the Electoral Commission set December 16, 2021, as the election date for the by-election. The seat fell vacant after Ffefeka Sserubugo, the LCV chairperson for Kayunga district was found dead hanging by the tree near his home in Kayunga.
Waddimba was unveiled on Tuesday by Democratic Party President Norbert Mao at the party headquarters at City House, Kampala.
Waddimba from Bukeeka village, Kangulumira sub-county in Kayunga district is also the personal assistant to Mao. He is a former leader in the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD).
In 2016, he contested for the Ntenjeru South MP seat on the DP ticket but lost.
Waddimba says that his priority will be fighting land grabbers. He says that in Bbale sub county and Galiraaya, the forest reserves of Kiwuula, Bbajjo, and Wamali have been grabbed by some people who acquired titles illegally and hatched plans to evict the squatters.
According to Waddimba, he plans to weed out fake agricultural inputs, look for markets for the agricultural produce and improve the education standards in Kayunga.
Mao said that the party has started a drive to raise funds that will sustain the campaigns.
The National Unity Platform-NUP’s Harriet Nakwedde and NRM’s Andrew Muwonge have both been endorsed by their respective parties to contest in the election.
