GILBERT FLART: Why Quality of Agricultural Inputs is vital for Uganda Farmers

OPINION: Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF) in collaboration with National Drug Authority a few months ago announced a crackdown of adulterated agro-inputs most specially Agro-chemicals like herbicides and acaracides

Famers have come up to raise complaints about the rising cases of fake agro-chemicals on the market that has impeded their farming activities.

Uganda’s Anti-Counterfeit Network (ACN) said that the country has existing laws on dealing with counterfeits but the enforcement is weak., (it is not surprising, this is Uganda).

My question is, how do these fake chemicals pass the registration process under the eye of Uganda Chemicals Board? then what about our laws, (Agricultural Chemicals (Control) Act. CAP 29).

Citation of the Act “ Controls and regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, trade, import and export of agricultural chemicals and provides for related matters. Establishes an Agricultural Chemicals Board to control the registration and certify all agricultural chemicals used in Uganda.”

Quality of chemicals means that the environment is preserved and that farmers get the best of the yields not forgetting value for money. The farmers should start dealing with authentic distributors for quality agro -chemicals
