BUNYORO REGION, UGANDA: Many learners in Bunyoro Region in the Districts of Hoima, Buliisa, Kikuube, Kagadi among others turned to fishing due to government’s closure of schools since the Covid 19 pandemic broke out.

On 18th March 2020, President Yoweri Museveni directed all schools to close with immediate effect as one of reducing the spread of Covid 19. For that reason, many learners were forced to go back to their homes which forced to start fishing on various landing sites on Lake Albert order to earn a living.

Speaking to DailyExpress, Charles Munguromo a senior five student at Kasule Secondary School in Wakiso district says he decided to stay home thinking the situation will normalize in a few weeks, however it turned the other way round.

“I expected schools will be opened in a few weeks, later resulted to months, and now it’s a whole year. This forced me to go to Butiaba landing site in Buliisa District to start fishing in order to collect money for school fees in case schools are reopened”. Munguromo said.

Stephen Madivoth a senior two student at Albert senior secondary School in Hoima District says after the closer of schools, life became harder which forced him to go for fishing in order to earn a living.
“When I joined fishing, I started getting money which helped me to look after my fellow family members”. Madivoth said.

Kasim Agaba a parent at Sebagoro landing site in Kikuube District says he forced to join his two sons in the fishing activity so as to use the joint effort to raise money for looking after their family.

Vincent Alpha Opio the Kikuube District vice Chairperson says there’s much need for the government and other leaders to sensitize parents on how to keep their children during the lockdown and sending them back to school in January next year when schools reopen.
