Namisindwa District Boss arrested over Embezzlement

The CID Spokesperson, Charles Twine, says that they have slapped Makelule with charges of embezzlement of Government money and causing financial loss.

NAMISINDWA, UGANDA: Namisindwa District Engineer, Mr. Robert Makelule Tululukha has been arrested on allegations of embezzlement of government funds and causing the district financial loss.

Makelule was arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) on the orders of Mr. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister of Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President.

CID Spokesperson, Mr Charles Twiine confirmed the report saying the engineer was arrested on Monday and that he will appear before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala on Wednesday (February 2, 2022) on charges of embezzlement of Government money and causing financial loss.

“We have preferred charges of embezzlement of government funds and causing financial loss against him. He will appear before the Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday (today) for plea taking,” said Twiine.

Makelule’s woes started last year when Mr Ogwang visited the district to inspect government projects and questioned the implementation of some of the projects such as the district and lower local council administration blocks, roads, seed schools and misuse of start-up funds, among others in the district.

Ogwang accused district acting engineer Mukelule and CAO of failing to monitor the construction of several roads, bridges, Magale health centre III, town council offices and district chambers where the government has injected billions, saying that there was no value for money.

“For example, the government gave Namisindwa district start-up fund of sh900m but the works so far are not worth the money. The works are shoddy, the building has developed cracks and there is no value for money. All this happened because there was no close Monitoring” Ogwang said then.

Ogwang also faulted the District Engineer and his team for doing nothing despite shoddy works on the facilities. It was also established that several government infrastructural projects in the region lie unfinished even after more than half of the funds were provided for them.

The minister then directed police to investigate the district officials over shoddy work, ghost projects and abandoned projects, among others.
