Anita Among elected new Speaker of 11th Parliament

Among garnered 401 votes against Bugiri Municipality MP Hon. Asuman Basalirwa who represented the opposition managed only 66 votes.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Bukedea district Woman MP and former deputy speaker Hon. Anita Among has been elected to replace deceased Jacob Oulanyah as the Speaker of the Eleventh parliament.

In the speakership elections held at Kololo independence grounds on Friday afternoon, Among garnered 401 votes against Bugiri Municipality MP Hon. Asuman Basalirwa who represented the opposition managed only 66 votes.

Out of the 468 votes cast, only one returned as an invalid vote in an exercise presided over by the CHief Justice of Uganda Justice Alfonso Owiny-Dollo.

In the May 2021 election, Hon Oulanyah Oulanyah polled 310 votes followed by Rebecca Kadaga who got 197 votes with Kira Municipality MP, Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda getting 15 votes.

Among’s election as speaker of parliament automatically rendered the deputy speaker position vacant and will be filled in the next voting activity with NRM’s Hon. Thomas Tayebwa in the race against opposition candidate & Kyoga County North MP Okot Bitek.
