KAMPALA, UGANDA: Ruhinda North MP, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has been elected the new Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda.

Tayebwa, standing as the flagbearer for the ruling NRM party garnered 379 votes while his challenger Hon. Okot P’Bitek Moses, the Opposition’s candidate got 82 votes.

Thomas Tayebwa who until Wednesday this week served as Government Chief Whip will now deputise Rt. Hon. Anita Among (NRM) who was earlier elected speaker to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah.
Among beat Opposition’s Hon. Asuman Basalirwa with 401 while against his rival’s 66.

Formerly an FDC Party cadre, Tayebwa was first elected to Parliament in 2016 after dumping his then-party to join the ruling NRM government.

With the election of the speaker and deputy speaker out of the way, Parliament is expected to come up with the burial programme for Oulanyah who died on March 21.

Oulanyah’s body is expected back this weekend although no confirmation to this has been made.
