Uganda Cranes, the National Senior Men’s Football Team have been pitted in Group F in the qualifier stages of the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the draw held on Tuesday, 19th April 2022, the senior men’s football team is in the same group with North African giants Alegria, West African outfit Niger, and neighbours Tanzania.

The cranes will travel to the north to play against the 2019 champions for the first time since 1999 looking for a chance to appear at the tournament finals for the first time since 2019.

In the first leg played that year in Algeria, Uganda lost 2-0 whereas the Cranes won 2-1 in the return leg in Kampala, although Uganda didn’t progress out of Group 7 after coming last with six points, one below second-placed Algeria.

For neighbors Tanzania, the most recent competitive engagement came on the road to qualifying for AFCON 2019 where Uganda emerged table leaders in the group that also had Cape Verde and Lesotho.

For Niger, the most recent encounter came in 2018 in a friendly match which the West African Nation won 2-1, but the most memorable game was in the 2008 AFCON Qualifiers when the Cranes won 3-0 at Mandela National Stadium courtesy of David Obua’s hat trick.

The qualifying matches will start in June this year with the fixtures and exact dates set to be announced at a later date. The top two teams in the group will automatically qualify for the 2023 AFCON finals that will be held in Ivory Coast.
