NAIROBI, KENYA: Uganda female athlete Leni Shida was on form as she destroyed Kenyan opposition winning on successive days in the Athletics Kenya National Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
The championships that ran from April 26-28
Leni won the Women’s 400m heats, semi-finals & final posting a season’s best time of 52.42 secs but unfortunately was unable to qualify for the World Championships.
She said she would have performed better but the weather was not in her favour.
“It was cold and raining in Nairobi and I think that also affected my speed,” she said.
Shida has for the last 9 years been coached by the husband & wife coaching team of Kevin & Sue O’Connor who speaking on the record set by the athlete said;
“It was cold & raining in Nairobi, which indicates she could have gone even faster today. Shida is the most determined and dedicated athlete I have ever coached.”
O’conner added; “For example, at Silver Springs Hotel’s Espace Gym (which has kindly given Shida complimentary membership), she always tries to lift heavier weights during our weight-training sessions.”
Shida, Jacent Nyamuhunge, Halima Nakaayi, Janat Chemusto and Belinda Chemutai are some of the female athletes that have so far qualified for the Africa Senior Championships.
Meanwhile, the athletes renew their quest for qualification for the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, at Namboole Stadium.
It is the last chance for athletes to qualify for the games that will be hosted by Birmingham and the Africa Senior Championships.
