The Commissioner of Transport regulation and safety, Mr. Winston Katushabe confirmed the report. He said the traffic police has now mounted an operation on government-owned vehicles that are increasingly being accused of impunity and road misuse.

“We are opening a war at Government vehicles now in addition to boda bodas who exhibit impunity. have called Transport Officer President’s Office for the action I have taken and the driver must be prosecuted, Mr Katushabe said on Monday morning. “How the vehicle will be removed, that is not my business. This impunity by such hooligans must be checked,” he added.

Mr. Rogers Nsereko, the KMP traffic commander said the driver’s arrest will serve as a warning to other drivers of government vehicles who intend to break traffic laws.
“We’re trying to enforce the law as it is because there’s a lot of impunity by drivers of government vehicles on our roads these days, he said.

Mr. Nsereko added that the traffic police officers were lucky that the commissioner of transport Mr Winston Katushabe was at Aga Khan and witnessed what the officers go through on a daily basis.

“He came in and supported us and we’re happy that we managed to arrest that driver. This is a call to all people who drive government vehicles to style up and stop being very indisciplined on our roads because they send a very bad picture to other road users. This will act as a deterrent example for the rest who are intending to break the law on our roads,” Nsereko said while addressing the media about the driver’s arrest.

His arrest comes amid public outcry, especially from motorists over increasing cases of impunity and disregard of traffic rules by drivers of government vehicles which in some cases has resulted into fatal accidents.
