KAMPALA, UGANDA: The mood at Mulago’s causality ward was still tense by mid-morning on Saturday as relatives checked on the victims of Friday’s Nile Avenue taxi crash.
The crash involving a taxi UAW 987Y along Nile avenue claimed two lives on spot and injured 10 others.
Security officers at the ward requested all the people who had come to see their relatives to wait outside the ward to give room for the doctors to attend to the victims.
Some of the patients were seen on the floor of the ward due to the large number of victims from different accidents who had filled up the ward.
Doctors and traffic officers who were taking statements from the victims were squeezing themselves between the ‘beds’ to find way to attend to the victims because of the large numbers that had filled the ward.
Hassan Kulabigwo from Muyenga Bukasa said that he got the information at 7: 30 on Friday night that his Sister Ruth Birungi was involved in a taxi crash in Kampala. On reaching the scene and found that her sister had been taken to Mulago hospital.
Situart Akashabaruhanga, a relative to Fortunate Nasasira, said that they got a call from the person who had picked her phone that she has been involved in an accident and rushed to Mulago hospital to find her.
Hellen Nantongo, a resident of Bukasa said most the people who got involved in the accidents are known to her since they were from the same residential area.
Ruth Birungi one of the Victims said that the doctors have done a great job to save their lives. She now feels a lot of pain in the chest and the neck.
Those injured in the Nile Avenue crash are Caroline Nampijja 25, Prossy Nakitto 34, Racheak Abiei 20, Grace Bigo 20, Fortunate Nasasira 21, Alex Guminsiriza 35, Patience Ninsiima 38 Jacob Sizomu, Ruth Birungi 23, and Teddy Akello 37.
According to the medical documents that URN saw it was Teddy Akello how was still in bad condition and other nine patients are getting stable.
