NUP MP, two others arrested after student stabbed to death at Makerere guild campaigns

The development comes at a time when the University council has suspended the ongoing campaigns and the students guild council just a day to the much-anticipated elections.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Kassanda South MP Hon. Frank Kabuye Kibirige, along with two other people have been arrested on allegations of murder of a student who was stabbed to death on Thursday evening during the violent guild campaigns at Makerere University.

The deceased identified as Bewatte Betungura, 27, a law student at Uganda Christian University (Kampala Campus) and a resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish Kawempe Division in Kampala died shortly after reaching Makerere University Hospital where he was rushed bleeding after a scuffle during the campaigns.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, MP Kabuye who subscribes to the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) was arrested together with two other people and are now being detained at different police stations in Kampala as investigations continue into the murder incident.

“It is alleged that during the open campaigns at rugby grounds Makerere University, a scuffle ensued between supporters of FDC candidate Justus Tukamushaba and those of the National Unity Platform (NUP) that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by the MP Frank Kabuye, among others,” Owoyesigyire noted.

“We have arrested three people whom we believe were part of the chaos. These are Kabuye Frank who is detained at CPS Kampala, Ssekidde Allan currently detained at Wandegeya police station and Kabuurwa Muzafaru who is detained at old Kampala police station,” he added.

Owoyesigyire said efforts are underway to have other suspects traced whereas the deceased’s body has been conveyed to the city mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem report.

“We have cordoned off the area, statements are still being recorded and CCTV footages will be retrieved to aid in the ongoing investigations. More details will be availed as soon as they are available.”

The development comes at a time when the University council has suspended the ongoing campaigns and the students guild council just a day to the much-anticipated elections.

A statement by Lorna Magara, the chairperson of the Makerere University Council indicated that they are appalled by the violent events that characterised the campaigns and consequently led to death of a student.

“The ongoing elections for the 88th Makerere University Students Guild leadership are suspended indefinitely; the Makerere University Students Guild is suspended with immediate effect, “Magara said.

Magara also revealed that the Council will convene in an emergency meeting today (Friday 15th July 2022) to consider further actions to address student indiscipline and violence at the University.
