Uganda’s long distance runner Oscar Chelimo grabbed the country’s third and final medal as the 2022 World Athletics Championships came to an end in Oregon, USA.
Chelimo who on Thursday won heat 1 of the 5000m race came third at 13:09:10 to earn Uganda a bronze medal in Sunday’s final race that was won by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s 1,500m finished beat the odds to clinch gold in a star-studded race posting a personal best time of 13:09:24.
In second place was Kenya’s Jacob Krop, who finished in 13:09.98.
Reigning Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, who was among the early leaders of the race, finished in ninth place with a time of 13:13.12.
Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris, who won gold at the 2019 world championships, was 13th in 13:24.67 while his counterpart Selemon Barega who was among those tipped to clinch medal in the race also finished out of the top 10.
This is Uganda’s best ever performance at the World Athletics Championships finishing off the competition with three medals in Gold (1) and Bronze (2).
