MUKONO, UGANDA: Mercy Agudo, a security guard attached to Centurian Security Limited in Mukono has been arrested for allegedly stealing property belonging to students of Uganda Christian University.
It is alleged that Agudo was caught red-handed by students at JK hostel where she was deployed as a guard. She was found in possession of clothes belonging to the students. The arrest comes days after guards attached to the company petitioned the Mukono district labour officer, Doreen Berinda over delayed payments.
In a letter signed by fifteen, the security guards indicate that their demands for salaries have been consistently ignored. The guards who are paid Shs 170,000 per month are demanding arrears for three months, while others for one month.
Mukono Centurian manager Dennis Nabasa says the company director is working hard to clear arrears. Its headquarters are based in Magwa-Jinja city.
Mukono district has recently experienced a rampan rise in armed robberies by unknown people who have attacked supermarkets, shops, petrol stations, schools, and parking spaces.
Eli Nkalubo, the chairperson LC I Agip Cell in Mukono Central Division says that the government should not rush to license the security companies. He says that they lack manpower to directly supervise and monitor them.
Mukono resident district commissioner (RDC) Fatumah Ndisaba wants a revision of the guidelines for approving the operations of security companies.
