LUWERO, UGANDA: The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Luwero has sentenced 22-year-old Dorothy Nabulime to 18 months in jail for subjecting her two-year-old child to aggravated torture, inhuman treatment and inflicting bodily harm.

Nabulime, a resident of Busula A zone in Busula trading center in Katikamu Sub County was last week convicted of the torture charges after she pleaded guilty before Luwero Grade one magistrate, John Paul Obuya.

The single mom of one however would later plead for forgiveness saying her atrocious actions were of anger resulting from the fact that the child she punished was born out of rape and doesn’t know the father to this day.

However, the court today charged her with cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment of a child contrary to section 7(1) of the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture act and assault occasioning actual bodily harm to the child contrary to section 236 of the penal code.

The Magistrate said Nabulime had pleaded for leniency because she is a victim of sexual abuse, but she has to be taken away from the public for her own safety and also to serve as an example to the rest.
