Assailants kill UPDF soldier in Kapeeka shooting spree

A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier in Kapeeka Saturday night succumbed to injuries following a gunfire exchange with unknown assailants who attacked the police patrol in Nakaseke District on Saturday night.

NAKASEKE, UGANDA: A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier in Kapeeka was shot and killed after unknown assailants attacked the joint-police patrol guarding a music concert in Nakaseke District on Saturday night.

The deceased soldier has been identified as Private Obed Tufeyo, 25, attached to the Namunkekela army detach while police said two of the assailants were also shot dead in the 10:45 pm shooting spree.

According to the Acting Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Lule, the group of yet-to-be-identified armed gang opened fire at a joint UPDF-Police patrol vehicle at Kapeeka playgrounds guarding a music show, forcing the officers on duty to retaliate in defence.

“The patrollers retaliated by shooting the assailants and killed two and recovered one gun. The assailants are not yet identified, still waiting for scene of crime officers to manage the scene,” Mr Patrick Lule said Sunday morning.

He added that the scene of crime was visited by a team of police and army officers led by the Nakaseke DPC, commander flying squad Savannah.

The Kapeeka shooting incident comes at a time the country is struggling to come to terms with increased gun attacks on security forces across the country.

The attackers in all similar incidents usually use motorcycles to escape from the scenes of crime.

Police recently said the assailants targeting security forces could be trying to raise a sizable number of firearms to conduct large-scale attacks in future.

The army has tried to downplay the impact of these attacks on the overall security situation in the country.

But sources say lack of cohesion in the armed forces, infiltration and corruption were undermining efforts to effectively counter these fresh security threats.

President Museveni has previously accused the terrorist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) of attacking police stations and assassinating high-profile citizens.
